Allendale Gardens

Allendale Gardens and Rainforest Walk

Two hectares of landscaped garden and lawn sit beside 26 hectares of cool temperate rainforest at Edith Creek just south of Smithton on the B22 road. Be inspired here by the combination of flower and foliage with trees and conifer indigenous to countries from around the world planted as an art form to create a series of garden rooms.

One of the many highlights is the Birch walk. A new rose garden has been planted to celebrate twenty five years since the first trees were planted. It is a wonderful place to wander or be still. The beauty and perfume here is a feast for the spirit and the soul.

Different plants feature every month providing a new experience for return visitors.

A path from the gardens leads you into Allendale's own cool temperate rainforest of 26 hectares (65 acres). Of special interest here growing under the filtered light of the tall canopy of blackwood and eucalyptus trees and towering tree fern glades are thirteen varieties of naturally growing fern including one rare endangered species hypolepus distans - the only substantial find in all of Australia.

Devonshire teas are available throughout the day. Fresh scones, homemade jam and local cream!

Kings Run Wildlife Tours

Kings Run

Kings Run Wildlife Tours are based in the Arthur River area of the North West of Tasmania about one hour's drive from Stanley. Prior to sunset guests are guided around the 830 acre coastal property exploring European and Aboriginal history and absorbing the natural values of the landscape. As darkness falls guests gather in a hide hoping to view the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil.

Kings Run is an 830 acre property bordered by the Southern ocean a few kilometres north of the Arthur River in North West Tasmania. The property was first used by the King family in 1880 for wintering cattle and now is the base for wildlife tours. Large areas of heath land, grassy flats and ti tree covered dune lines make the property a haven for a diverse range of flora and fauna. Geoff King has spent over twenty years researching the natural and cultural values of the property and now shares that knowledge with guests. Tours begin around an hour prior to sunset with a focus on birdwatching, European and Aboriginal history, tracks and scats and absorbing the rugged beauty of the coastline. After sunset the party retires to a hide, an old fisherman's shack, and spend a few hours waiting in the hope of viewing through a window the worlds largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil or its close relative the Spotted Tail Quoll.

The tours is suited to all age groups and operates 10 nights per month. Ten people is about the maximum that can comfortably fit into the hide, personalised tours are available, snacks and fluids are provided.
