Forests at the edge of the world contain a wide range of easily accessible environments. Within a ½ hour drive from Stanley there are towering eucalypt forests, open plains of buttongrass and heathland, magnificent rainforests and mysterious blackwood swamps.

These forests are managed for a wide range of values besides timber production including water quality, landscape, wildlife, recreation and honey production. Each year, our forests beehive sites produce about 140 tonnes of the unique Leatherwood honey, about a quarter of Tasmania's total production. If you visit in summer, look for the white flowers of the Leatherwood tree.

The recreation opportunities in this corner of the state are many. If you feel like getting active in State Forest, why not ride a horse, trail bike, canoe, raft or even walk your dog? Should you feel like relaxing, there are sites where you can have a picnic or barbecue, take a short walk or even try your luck at catching a fish.

Most of the roads in the area are unsealed but easily manageable by cars at all times of the year. Please watch out for the wildlife and be aware of logging traffic.

South Arthur Forest Drive & Balfour Track Forest Reserve

South Arthur Forest Drive

The South Arthur Forest Drive is a 60km loop on the Sumac and Rapid River Roads. Visitors will need to put aside half a day to enjoy all the sights and sounds that the forest walks have to offer.

Along the drive you can visit the Sumac Lookout with its views of the Arthur River. Further on, the Julius River Forest Reserve has a half hour walk through cool temperate rainforest. At Lake Chisholm Forest Reserve a path through majestic old myrtle forests takes you to the flooded limestone sinkhole known as Lake Chisholm.

The Milkshakes Hills Forest Reserve has both eucalypt forest and rainforest and the energetic are rewarded with great views of the countryside from the top of one of the 'Milkshakes'. There are also great picnic areas at Kanunnah Bridge and Tayatea Bridge.

Located nearby is the Balfour Track Forest Reserve. The relatively flat walk is three hours return and was cut for packhorses and prospectors at the beginning of the century to access the largely abanded mining town of Balfour.

Tarkine Forest Adventures at Dismal Swamp

Dismal Swamp

Located at the Northern end of the Tarkine Wilderness is Dismal Swamp a 640 hectare sinkhole (the largest sinkhole in the Southern hemisphere). Twenty minutes West of Smithton and only twenty minutes from the beautiful coastline at Marrawah. Dismal Swamp offers an experience that only very few people ever get to enjoy.

From the moment you drive through the giant entrance gates you know that this is different. The car parks are surrounded by giant old growth trees and multitudes of man ferns and other natural flora. Red, flame and pink breasted robins as well as blue wrens and a myriad of finches greet you as you follow the paths to the visitor centre. The centre itself is an award winning structure that is perched on the very edge of the Dismal Swamp sinkhole and gives fantastic views over this most unique natural wonder.

For the young and young at heart there is the opportunity to ride the giant 110 metre slide to get to the sinkhole floor in 15 seconds, or less. Or for a more sedate introduction take the 360 metre path down to the maze. The maze is 1.2 kms of boardwalk in the swamp itself and is surrounded by a forest that is probably the same today as it was 10,000 years ago. Marvel at the magical atmosphere and appreciate the works devised by local artisans to represent their personal view of what should be in a place called Dismal Swamp. Watch out for potoroos, pademelons and echidna as you wind your way through this very special forest.

More than just a stopover Tarkine Forest Adventures is recognised as a must see destination with something to offer everyone who has a love of the outdoors and the wondors of nature.
