On a blooming oasis in the Southern Ocean, green-thumbed Tasmanians love to dig and dibble.

Among other green and growing delights, you’ll find heritage gardens gracing historic homes. Blooming Tasmania’s varied program of statewide events and activities will excite garden lovers. We are lucky enough to have one of Tasmanias most beautiful private gardens in the heart of the edge of the world – and in wild places, there are nature’s coastal gardens to explore.

Even our farms are gardens – look for fields of blooming poppies, tulips and spring bulbs.

Distinct seasons add special character – from the fresh emerald greens of spring to autumn’s reds and golds, you’ll find every shade under the sun.

Allendale Gardens & Rainforest Walk

Two hectares of landscaped garden and lawn sit beside 26 hectares of cool temperate rainforest at Edith Creek just south of Smithton on the B22 road.

Be inspired here by the combination of flower and foliage with trees and conifer indigenous to countries from around the world planted as an art form to create a series of garden rooms. One of the many highlights is the Birch Walk. A new Rose Garden has been planted to celebrate twenty five years since the first trees were planted is a wonderful place to wander or be still. The beauty and perfume here is a feast for the spirit and the soul.

Different plants feature every month providing a new experience for return visitors.

A path from the gardens leads you into Allendale’s own Cool Temperate Rainforest of 26 hectares (65 acres). Of special interest here growing under the filtered light of the tall canopy of blackwood and eucalyptus trees and towering tree fern glades are thirteen varieties of naturally growing fern including one rare endangered species hypolepus distans - the only substantial find in all of Australia.

The gardens are open from 9AM to 5.00PM daily from 1st October to late April.

Devonshire teas are available throughout the day. Fresh scones, homemade jam and local cream! Prints, postcards and a DVD slideshow of the gardens are available.
